Extending eduroam in the Asia Pacific

AARNet is a lead collaborator for a project to extend the footprint of eduroam (education roaming) across the Asia Pacific. Eduroam is a secure global roaming wireless network access service built for the research and education community.

The project is funded by the Trans-Eurasian Information Network (TEIN) and will help set up eduroam in seven countries – Bhutan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The advantage of eduroam is that the service provides students, staff and faculty with mobility between participating institutions’ wireless infrastructures, without the burden of institutional administration of guest network access. Eduroam is currently available at more than 12,000 locations worldwide.

At the APAN41 meeting held in January 2016 in Manila, a 2-day eduroam workshop was conducted for the national research and education networks (NRENs) of the project target countries.

During the workshop, AARNet and project partners – JNU and KISTI (South Korea), SingAREN (Singapore) and REANNZ (New Zealand) provided hands-on training to the NRENs to skill them up as eduroam trainers in their respective countries. The training included setting up eduroam, simulated wireless roaming and effective management of a sustainable eduroam service using tools developed by the project.

The participants are now back in their respective countries building the eduroam service with the continued assistance of AARNet and the other project partners. This project aims to setup eduroam in these countries by the end of June 2016.

The global NREN community is a collegiate community, sharing resources and technical expertise across borders to support collaboration and scientific discovery on a global scale.
