Research and Education (R&E) Networks AARNet (Australia) and NORDUnet (European Nordics) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), kicking off a new international collaboration to develop global quality standards for over-the-top (OTT) products and services for the research and education community.

Cross-institution and international collaborations are on the rise in the research and education sector worldwide. At the same time R&E Networks are increasingly offering OTT services such as voice, video, cloud services, and other IT solutions that run over the network infrastructure in their respective countries. By joining forces, R&E networks can cost efficiently share resources and knowledge to address the unique needs of researchers and educators and improve the user experience for OTT services on a global scale.

The AARNet and NORDUnet partnership is currently focusing efforts on product development for video collaboration services, working with each other and a leading enterprise cloud video communications vendor, to develop, trial and deploy storage solutions and features specifically designed for the global research and education community.

In August 2019, the partnership will launch a new initiative aimed at leveraging each other’s support desks for after-hours activities to deliver 24×7 support for OTT products and services.

The long-term goal is to deliver a ubiquitous set of high-quality solutions tailored for the research and education sector and available on desktops or mobile devices 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from anywhere in the world.

AARNet CEO Chris Hancock said, “We’re excited about this partnership. This is about working together to provide infrastructure and solutions that drive innovation and productivity worldwide by seamlessly connecting researchers and educators and enabling the exchange of knowledge, data and ideas—anytime and anywhere.”

The signing of the MOU took place on 19 June, 2019 in Tallinn, Estonia at TNC19, the annual international research and education networking conference. For more information about the initiative, and to find out how your R&E network can participate, please email contact us.
