AARNet announces Dr Carina Kemp as the new Director, eResearch

Dr Kemp joins AARNet from Geoscience Australia (GA), where she has been an integral member of the leadership team for the past 6 years.  Most recently she has been Chief Information Officer, with responsibility for providing strategic leadership for setting enterprise ICT directions, architecture and priorities to enable science across GA.

While at GA, Dr Kemp also lead the development of virtual laboratories and high-performance computing to enable geophysical applications for pre-competitive dataset delivery.

During her 20-year career, Dr Kemp has also worked as a research scientist, a company geophysicist and a consultant to industry. Her enduring interests include Open Data, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, High Performance Computing, communication of science, improving collaboration across science and information technology disciplines, and encouraging leadership and women in science.

Dr Kemp, holds a number of qualifications including a PhD from the University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Science (Geology and Geophysics) from the University of New South Wales. She has a technical background in geology, physics, mathematics and computer engineering.

AARNet CEO Chris Hancock says Dr Kemp was appointed after an extensive competitive selection process.

“We are delighted to have Carina join the AARNet executive team. She will be playing a key role in both building AARNet’s eResearch capacity and developing new opportunities to support researchers,” he said.

Dr Kemp will lead the AARNet eResearch team and AARNet’s engagement in the Australian eResearch community. Peter Elford, who filled the Director, eResearch role for the past 4 years, will continue as Director, Government Relations, and will focus on developing partnerships and growing AARNet’s engagement across federal and state government.
