eResearch Australasia 2013 – Delivering eResearch for the Masses

The eResearch Australasia 2013 conference is happening in Brisbane this month from 20 to 25 October.

The conference showcases the latest information and communications technologies to help researchers collect, manage, share, process, analyse, store, find, and re-use information.

AARNet’s Guido Aben and Neil Witheridge feature in the lineup of presentations and workshops:

Wednesday 23 October at 14.15pm
A “Science Distribution Network” – Hadoop/ownCloud synchronised across the Tasman
– AARNet’s eResearch Director Guido Aben, with University of Auckland and NeSI Auckland collaborators

The introduction of cloud file storage and synchronization services on a retail basis – best exemplified by DropBox – is changing researchers’ behaviour around their datasets, posing both an opportunity and a threat. It is increasing appreciation of data networking issues, such as transfer performance, amongst a researcher community who don’t typically engage with eResearch providers. However, it is causing a movement of intellectual property, with the data, from R&E-operated data stores into commercial foreign-jurisdiction platforms.

In seizing the opportunity of increased researcher awareness, AARNet has begun deploying a system that better suits the collaborative nature in which teams operate…READ MORE

Friday 25 October  – all day workshop
OpenConext workshop
– AARNet’s Manager, Authentication and Authorisation Services, Neil Witheridge and SURFnet’s Francois Kooman

The OpenConext Workshop is a full-day workshop, divided into two sections where the first section is a general introduction targeted to non-developers as well as developers, and the second section is very detailed and targeted at developers who will be implementing services to be hosted by an OpenConext deployment.…READ MORE
