Inside Melbourne Museum

Museums Victoria is the first Australian GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) institution to deploy eduroam, the secure global wifi service for the research and education community.

Initially, Eduroam will support mobility for staff and visiting researchers at Melbourne Museum, with staged rollouts to other venues, including the Immigration Museum and Scienceworks and the Royal Exhibition Building.

Museums Victoria staff visiting universities, research institutes and GLAMs worldwide where eduroam is deployed will be able to access wifi using the credentials they use at their home institution.

GLAMs offer a bounty of material for researchers to explore and new technologies and connectedness are driving the re-emergence of collaborations between museums and universities. Eduroam is one of several services AARNet offers customers for facilitating cross-institutional collaborations and improving workflow.

What is eduroam?

Eduroam allows users from participating institutions to gain secure wireless network access at other participating institutions across Australia and around the globe using the standard username and password credentials they use at their home institution for wireless network access.

Eduroam is available at more than 12,000 locations worldwide. In Australia, 38 universities participate in eduroam as well as a number of research institutes, hospitals, schools, airports and cultural organisations.
