Durack Institute of Technology is the first vocational education institute in Western Australia to connect to AARNet, positioning the institute at the forefront of WA’s e-learning and training, changing the way education is delivered.
AARNet’s high performing internet access gives Durack the capacity to push its strategic e-learning and training initiatives. It provides new, next generation collaboration products to students and staff at its main campus in Geraldton and the Batavia Coast Maritime Centre (BCMI).
Martyn Edwards, Manager of Information Systems at Durack, said it is an exciting development with benefits that include providing students with free access to cloud computing services like Microsoft Office 365 and providing unlimited space in the cloud for students enrolled at Durack using their student ID number.
“Durack staff and student traffic is now moving to cloud-based software as a service, and the speed and strength of the AARNet backbone will provide students with new experiences,” he said.
“It is a benefit that will change how lecturers at Durack deliver training to their students, and it will improve access to wireless networking and Internet access to the 700 workstations across Durack’s five campuses.
“Durack has 5,000 students and more than 350 staff accounts across the five campuses, and this network will also improve remote access services to staff using mobile devices,” said Mr Edwards.
“AARNet will allow real-time, high-definition collaboration in room video conferencing and web conferencing.”
Mr Edwards said it would also allow access to AARNet on-network services to common educational resources like Lynda.com providing staff and students with a rich media content experience.
He said the future benefits of being part of the AARNet network included students being able to access their electronic classroom schedule on smartphones or tablets.
“Mobile devices are fast outselling personal computers so being part of this network is of great benefit,” Mr Edwards said.
“It is very exciting to be a part of this dynamic change in education delivery.”
