AARNet (Australia’s Academic and Research Network) has provided Swinburne University of Technology with a 100Gbps connection for the powerful new OzSTAR supercomputer.
This new ultra-fast network connection will meet the massive data transfer needs of astronomers across Australia, who will use OzSTAR to analyse data and search for black holes, explosions in space and gravitational waves.
AARNet CEO Chris Hancock says the astronomy community is a heavy-duty user of AARNet, the nation’s dedicated big data research network.
“Astronomers need super connections for moving massive data sets generated by their research. We’re excited about this new AARNet connection – it supports cross-institutional and global collaborations and gives the scientists the head room they need from a network. This is the kind of research that truly inspires the next generation of STEM students and astronomers,” he says.
A key role of the new OzSTAR supercomputer is to underpin the research efforts of the Swinburne-hosted Centre of Excellence in Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav).
“AARNet’s high bandwidth network infrastructure provides OzGrav with the ability to transfer the enormous datasets we are generating between our telescopes and supercomputers and visualize the results generated by machines like our new supercomputer OzSTAR,” says Aleksander Subic, Swinburne’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Development).
AARNet also connects other national facilities that support astronomy research, including major observatories and telescopes around the country, and the Pawsey and NCI supercomputing facilities.
